About the Presenter (Short)

 

Dr. John Murphy is an internationally recognized trainer and practitioner of brief solution-focused therapy with children, adolescents, families, and school problems. He has trained thousands of professionals throughout the world and is featured in the highly acclaimed videotape series, Child Therapy with the Experts. A former public high school teacher, Murphy received a Ph.D. in school psychology from the University of Cincinnati in 1988 and was named by NASP as one of the top five school psychologists in the United States in 1993. He is a Licensed Psychologist, Professor of Psychology and Counseling at the University of Central Arkansas, Behavior Support Consultant to Conway (AR) Schools, and author of Brief Intervention for School Problems (with Barry L. Duncan) and the award-winning Solution-Focused Counseling in Middle and High Schools. 

 

 

 

 

About the Presenter (Extended)

 

Dr. John Murphy is an internationally recognized leader and trainer in the practice of solution-focused brief therapy with children, adolescents, and school problems. He began as a high school teacher in Fort Thomas (KY) Public Schools before receiving M.Ed. and  Ph.D. degrees in School Psychology from the University of Cincinnati. He also completed post-doctoral training in strategic family therapy with Dr. Barry Duncan at the Dayton (OH) Institute of Family Therapy.  Dr. Murphy worked as a full-time school psychologist in Covington (KY) Independent Public Schools from 1982 to 1995 before taking a faculty position at the University of Central Arkansas. He continues to work regularly in schools and private practice.   

Dr. Murphy was named by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) as one of the top five school psychologists in the United States in 1993, and received the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) 1998 Writer of the Year Award for his book, Solution-Focused Counseling in Middle and High Schools. This book was updated and revised, and was released by the American Counseling Association in 2008 as Solution-Focused Counseling in Schools (2nd ed.).  He also authored (with Barry L. Duncan) the book, Brief Intervention for School Problems (2nd ed.): Outcome Informed Strategies (2007, Guilford Press), as well as numerous articles and book chapters on school behavior problems and solution-focused applications in schools. His books have been translated in several languages. He is currently completing the book, Interviewing Students for Solutions to School Problems, which is scheduled to be published by Merrill/Prentice Hall sometime in 2010. Dr. Murphy's work is featured in the videotape training series, Child Therapy with the Experts (Allyn & Bacon Publishers). He is a charter member of the Institute for the Study of Therapeutic Change (ISTC), a Chicago-based international institute devoted to application and dissemination of empirical information on psychotherapeutic change and outcome-informed therapy. 

Dr. Murphy is currently an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Central Arkansas, Mental Health Consultant with Conway Public Schools, and Consultant/Trainer with other agencies and school districts in the United States. He is a popular workshop presenter who has trained thousands of helping professionals throughout the country and overseas including psychologists, counselors, therapists, social workers, teachers, and administrators.  Dr. Murphy's workshops are consistently rated as informative, practical, and engaging.
